Aval Kozhukattai - Poha Kozhukattai

Aval kozhukattai is an alternative to the regular aval upma. It is prepared similar to upma kozhukattai which is made of raw rice. It is a great after school snack for kids or can even be served for breakfast or dinner.

Aval Kozhukattai Recipe

Makes  -  18 kozhukattais

Ingredients


  • Aval(Poha) -  2 cup
  • Water  -  2 cup
  • Coconut  -  1/2 cup
  • Salt  -  as required


To temper


  • Mustard  -  1 tsp
  • Urad dal  -  1 tsp
  • Channa dal  - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves  -  a handful
  • Red chilly  -  2 to 3(long variety)
  • Asafoetida  -  little


Method


  1. Clean the aval before grinding to remove any dust/impurities.
  2. Dry grind aval in mixie to a rava like consistency.
  3. Add oil in pan and temper with the items given under " to temper".
  4. Add water and let it boil.
  5. Once water starts boiling, add the aval and mix it well.
  6. Cook till it leaves the sides of the pan.
  7. Once it is cooked, add coconut and give a quick stir and switch off the stove.
  8. Once the mixture is bearable to touch by hand, prepare kozhukattais.
  9. Steam it in idli plates till a fork inserted comes out clean.
  10. Serve hot with chutney or sambar. We had with home made lemon pickle.

Notes

  • Any variety of aval can be used for this dish. Ensure to completely remove any dust particles before grinding it.
