Kids Snack Ideas

This post lists the variety of options which can be given as snacks to kids. Based on whether it is a fresh snack given at home or a packed one to school or travel, the options vary. I have collated them based on what i follow for my daughter.


FRUITS

  1. Strawberry

Always peel the skin and deseed the fruits where required. Then cut the fruits to bite size pieces. Fruits such as apple, pear should not be cut and consumed later as they tend to change color. Also when packing for travel and school, avoid fruits which may be tend to ooze out water over a period of time.

VEGETABLES

  1. Carrot
  2. Cucumber
  3. Boiled sweet corn
Fresh carrot and cucumber are perfect to pack for snacks. When providing tiffin items for kids lunch box, this is a healthy option for snacks so that vegetables are included in the day's diet.

DRIED FRUITS AND NUTS

  1. Raisins
  2. Dried apricots
  3. Dried figs
  4. Dates
  5. Cashews
  6. Almond
  7. Walnut
  8. Pistachios
  9. Roasted peanuts
Dried Fruits and nuts provide lots of nutrients required for growing kids. They can be eaten as such or can be included in other dishes like milkshakes, sweets, desserts, kheer varieties and snack items.

SUNDAL VARIETES

  3. Green gram dal sundal

Sundal varieties as snacks is another great way to include legumes in kids diet. Some of them need to be soaked before cooking. Sundal is a great after school or evening snack.

JUICE VARIETIES

During summer months, you can make juices out of seasonal fruits, spiced buttermilk, panagam, kheer varieties etc. Kheer can be made in advance and served chilled. This will be a good alternative to the regular milk drinks. This can be given either as a mid morning snack or as an after school evening snack. Avoid store bought drinks and juices and always try to make them fresh at home.
