Kuzhi paniyaram - savoury version - using idli batter

This is an instant savoury version of kuzhi paniyaram using idli batter or the 3 in 1 batter. This can be prepared as a quick breakfast or evening snack item. We can prepare this along with the sweet paniyaram.

Ingredients


  • Idli batter/3 in 1 batter  -  2 cups
  • Onion  -  1 finely chopped
  • Green chilies  - 1 or 2 as per the spice level, finely chopped
  • Curry leaves  -  few leaves
  • Coriander leaves  -  little, finely chopped
  • Mustard - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal  -  1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida -  a generous pinch
  • Salt  -  as required
  • Oil -  for tempering

Method


  1. Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard, urad dal, asafoetida .
  2. Once the dal turns golden brown, add curry leaves, onion and green chillies.
  3. Take idli batter in a bowl and add the tempered items to it.
  4. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and required salt and make a thick batter.
  5. Add oil in the paniyaram pan and pour a small portion of the batter in each hole and cook on both sides.

Notes


  • Tempering and adding the spices adds a nice flavour to the paniyaram. If preparing for kids, green chillies can be skipped.
  • For a quicker version, just add onions and salt(if required) to the batter and prepare as above.
  • Finely chopped or grated ginger can also be added for extra flavour.
