Onion Tomato Capsicum Masala

Onion tomato capsicum masala is an easy to prepare side dish which can be used in a variety of ways. It can be mixed with rice, as a stuffing for bread sandwich or even as a side dish for roti. This is a simple recipe which even beginners in cooking can try with ease.

Onion Tomato Capsicum Masala Recipe

Serves  :  3 - 4 people

Ingredients


  • Onion  -  5 medium sized, finely chopped
  • Tomato  -  3 medium sized, finely chopped
  • Capsicum(Green)  -  1 big or 2 small sized, finely chopped
  • Mustard  -  1 tsp
  • Split urad dal  - 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida -  2 generous pinches
  • Turmeric powder  -  1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder  -  1 tsp
  • Sambar powder  -  3 tsp
  • Salt  -  as required
  • Water  -  little
  • Oil   -  2 tbsp


Method


  • In a pan, add oil and once it is heated up, add mustard, urad dal and asafoetida in the same order.
  • Once they crackle, add onion and saute well.
  • Once onion turns transparent, add tomato, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, sambar powder and salt and mix well. 
  • Once the mixture is half cooked, add capsicum and sprinkle little water.
  • Cover and cook till the raw smell of the powders leave and the oil separates out.
  • Use it as a stuffing for bread sandwich or as a side dish for roti. We can also mix with hot rice and have it.

Notes


  • Since i used the same dish for bread sandwich and for rice, i have used more quantity for the ingredients. You can adjust the ingredients quantity according to your requirement.
  • Always add capsicum after the masala is half cooked, to retain its crunchiness.
  • Always sprinkle very little water for the masala to blend well. If more water is added, the masala becomes watery and will be difficult to mix with rice or use as a stuffing.
  • I have used sambar powder for additional flavour. You can skip it and use red chilli powder alone or use dhaniya powder in place of sambar powder.
  • I have added capsicum to make it more healthy. The same dish can be prepared by using onion and tomato alone.
  • This dish is ideal for travel and lunch box. When refrigerated, it can be used for a day.
