Idli Upma

Idli Upma is an easy to prepare snack/tiffin variety with leftover idlis. There are many variations to this upma, which I have mentioned under the "Notes" section. This can be prepared as an after school snack for kids.

Idli Upma Recipe

Serves  :  1

Ingredients

  • Idli  -  4
  • Oil  -  4 tsp
  • Mustard  -  1 tsp
  • Urad dal  -  1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida  -  2 generous pinches
  • Green chilly  - 2
  • Curry leaves  -  few
  • Onion  -  1 medium sized
  • Carrot  -  2 tbsp(finely chopped)
  • Salt  -  as required

Method

  • Crumble the idli.  You can refrigerate the prepared idlis if required, for easy crumbling.
  • Finely chop the onion, carrot and green chilly.
  • In a pan, add oil and once heated, add mustard. Once mustard crackles, add urad dal and asafoetida.
  • Once dal turns golden brown, add onion, curry leaves and chilly.
  • Once onions are half fried, add the carrot and needed salt and stir well. Carrot has to be crunchy, hence do not fry it for long.
  • Add the crumbled idli and mix everything well. Switch off the stove after everything blends well.
  • Serve hot. Top with little sugar for best taste.

Notes

  • I have added carrots to make it more healthy and appealing for kids. Green peas can also be added. You can also make it plain with just onions and chilly.
  • Idli milagai podi can be added for added flavour and taste to this upma. If adding, add it to the crumbled idli with little sesame oil.
